Ignore Rankings: UK Will Overwhelm Georgia St
However, there are some interesting first round matchups between No. 2 and No. 3 seeds that could go either way.
Coming in at No. 5 on the list is...
No. 32 Kentucky vs. No. 40 Georgia State
This is one of the closer in ranking first round matchups in the first round of the NCAA tournament but these teams are so different they are hard to compare.
Kentucky's most striking match this year was their match against Virginia. The Wildcats barely lost to the No. 2 team in the country, taking it to a close 3-4 before falling. Kentucky also beat No. 15 Florida 4-1. The Wildcats have three ranked players in their lineup compared to the Panthers' one, but they've been struggling a little bit lately. Kentucky has lost its last four matches to Alabama (not ranked), No. 36 Arkansas, No. 27 Ole Miss, and No. 44 Tennessee. If Kentucky isn't mentally prepared and past these losses, this will open up a chance for Georgia State to win.
Georgia State's highest-ranked win was over No. 33 Florida State 4-2, and GSU is coming off of a conference tournament win. The Panthers reached as high as No. 30 in the rankings and ended their season with a 10-match winning streak.
However, the teams that Georgia State has beaten have been lower-ranked squads. We haven't seen the Panthers play any tough opponents this year to boost their ranking or to prepare them for a team like Kentucky.
PREDICTION: Kentucky def. Georgia State 4-2
